British Extends Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Warning Roster with An additional 11 Countries

Methanol alert sign

The UK government has added an additional eleven more destinations to its travel alert register concerning the threats of toxic alcohol poisoning from adulterated beverages.

The revised advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "a global increase in the number of confirmed occurrences" of methanol poisoning.

Just a few weeks ago, authorities had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, after a number of notable incidents such as the deadly demise of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that as little as small amounts of methanol can result in vision loss or death within twelve to forty-eight hours.

What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol typically employed in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. It is not designed for human consumption.

While it is generated during the creation of beverages, commercial firms bring it down to low, safe levels for drinking through the refining procedure.

Yet in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to save money, and as it is tasteless and smell-free, it is impossible to notice.

Authorities' Recommendations for Travelers

Foreign Office representative the minister stated that all travellers should recognize the indicators of industrial alcohol contamination.

"When you are drinking spirits overseas, opt for reputable establishments and avoid homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," the official advised.

"Should anything seems unusual, for example a fatigue that's far more intense than usual or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention fast."

The complete roster of destinations listed as posing a risk of toxic alcohol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
